The glamour, tension and high-stakes drama of the Cannes Film Festival may soon become the backdrop for one of television’s most acclaimed series. Season 4 of The White Lotus is officially set around the Cannes Film Festival, bringing creator Mike White’s award-winning social satire into the heart of the French Riviera.
Production has already begun along the Mediterranean coastline, with the iconic Hôtel Martinez expected to serve as one of the season’s central filming locations. The luxury hotel, a longtime symbol of Cannes elegance and celebrity culture, will reportedly be transformed into the fictional “White Lotus Cannes.”
The announcement has generated excitement across both the television and film industries, as fans speculate about how the Emmy-winning drama will blend its signature themes of privilege, power and personal dysfunction with the spectacle of one of the world’s most famous film festivals.
Cannes and ‘The White Lotus’: A Natural Match

For years, “The White Lotus” has built its identity around lavish destinations filled with wealthy guests whose vacations slowly unravel into chaos, tension and scandal. Previous seasons explored luxury resorts in Hawaii, Sicily and Thailand, using beautiful locations as a backdrop for sharp commentary on class, fame and modern relationships.
Now, the series is entering one of the most glamorous and politically charged entertainment environments in the world.
The Cannes Film Festival, known for its red carpets, celebrity arrivals and multimillion-dollar film deals, offers fertile ground for the show’s trademark storytelling. Industry insiders say the setting could allow the series to satirize celebrity culture, artistic ambition and the often chaotic machinery behind international cinema.
Producer David Bernad recently revealed that the idea for the Cannes-based season was inspired by a real-life visit to the festival in 2021.
According to Bernad, an awkward and humorous interaction with restaurant staff during the trip sparked discussions about the personalities, egos and tensions that naturally emerge during the event.
“The energy around Cannes is intoxicating,” Bernad explained during an appearance at the Canneseries Festival. “There’s glamour, pressure, ambition and unpredictability everywhere. It became the perfect setting for the next chapter of the show.”
Filming Amid One of the World’s Biggest Festivals
Although filming has started on the French Riviera, the production has yet to become highly visible during this year’s Cannes Film Festival, which runs through May 23.
Industry observers initially speculated that cast members might appear alongside real festival attendees or blend into live red carpet events. However, Cannes organizers are known for carefully protecting the focus of the festival and limiting outside productions that could overshadow official selections.
Representatives for both HBO and festival organizers have remained largely silent about the extent of filming taking place during the event itself.
Still, the possibility of seeing fictional “White Lotus” characters interacting with the real-life Cannes atmosphere has fueled intense curiosity among fans and media outlets alike.
Luxury Hotels Become Part of the Story

At the center of the production stands the Hôtel Martinez, one of Cannes’ most recognizable landmarks.
Opened in 1929 and located directly along the Croisette, the hotel has hosted generations of Hollywood stars, filmmakers and global elites attending the festival. During Cannes each year, its lobby becomes a hub of activity filled with actors, directors, producers and photographers moving between premieres and private parties.
The hotel’s grand staircase and Art Deco-inspired interiors have become synonymous with festival luxury.
Michel Cottray, the hotel’s general manager, acknowledged that the property is preparing for extensive filming in the coming months.
Some floors will reportedly be closed to the public during production, while scenes are expected to be shot throughout the hotel.
“We are preparing for a major experience,” Cottray said. “The festival already brings extraordinary energy every year, and this project adds another exciting layer to it.”
The Martinez has long maintained close ties to the Cannes Film Festival itself. It regularly hosts jury members, filmmakers and official festival guests during the annual event.
Star-Studded Cast Adds to Anticipation
Season 4 of “The White Lotus” is already attracting attention for its cast lineup.
Actors including Steve Coogan, Heather Graham, Kumail Nanjiani and Rosie Perez are among the names linked to the new season.
Some cast members are already attending Cannes independently for other projects. Vincent Cassel recently appeared on the festival’s red carpet for the premiere of “Parallel Tales,” while Laura Dern is expected later during the festival for a documentary centered on her father, actor Bruce Dern.
The blend of real-world celebrity appearances and fictional storytelling only adds to the intrigue surrounding the production.
Cannes Has Long Fascinated Filmmakers

“The White Lotus” is far from the first production to use Cannes as inspiration.
The festival has appeared in numerous films and television series over the years, though recreating its atmosphere authentically has always been a challenge. Productions such as “Call My Agent!” and “Mr. Bean’s Holiday” famously incorporated Cannes into their narratives, often combining real festival footage with staged scenes filmed elsewhere.
What makes “The White Lotus” unique is its intention to fully immerse viewers inside the culture, tension and luxury of the event itself.
Industry experts believe the setting could offer one of the series’ richest social commentaries yet, especially given Cannes’ reputation for exclusivity, wealth and behind-the-scenes competition.
A Perfect Setting for Satire and Suspense
The Cannes Film Festival already contains many of the ingredients that define “The White Lotus” — power dynamics, celebrity obsession, hidden rivalries and public glamour masking private conflict.
Inside the Martinez hotel alone, movie memorabilia, Michelin-starred dining and elite guest lists create an environment that feels tailor-made for the show’s signature mix of elegance and unease.
Cottray even acknowledged that unexpected situations are common during the festival, though he declined to share specific stories involving celebrity guests.
“There are always surprises,” he said. “You have to be ready for anything.”
For fans of “The White Lotus,” that unpredictability may be exactly what makes Cannes the perfect destination for the show’s next chapter.
