What to know about the 2026 Met Gala: Beyoncé, Bezos, bustiers, and baubles

The idea that fashion belongs in the realm of art is hardly new—but this year, the Met Gala is set to explore that concept more boldly than ever. With the theme “Costume Art,” the 2026 edition promises a striking blend of creativity, history, and spectacle as celebrities ascend the museum’s famous steps on May 4.

Inspired by the spring exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, the theme will highlight the deep connections between fashion and artistic expression across centuries. The exhibit itself will showcase around 200 garments alongside 200 works of art, drawing direct parallels between designers and artists.

A Night of Glamour With Purpose

Beyond the red carpet spectacle, the Met Gala serves a critical role: it is the primary fundraiser for the Costume Institute—the only department at the museum that funds itself. The event consistently draws enormous financial support, raising tens of millions of dollars annually and reinforcing its status as one of the most exclusive nights in global fashion.

Attendance is strictly by invitation, with tickets priced at a level accessible only to the ultra-elite. The guest list typically includes a mix of celebrities, designers, business leaders, and cultural figures.

Star-Studded Hosts and High-Profile Names

This year’s event is co-chaired by a powerful lineup, including global superstar Beyoncé, acclaimed actress Nicole Kidman, tennis legend Venus Williams, and longtime organizer Anna Wintour, who has overseen the gala for decades.

A broader host committee—featuring designers, actors, and performers—adds even more star power, reflecting the event’s wide cultural influence.

Meanwhile, attention has also focused on high-profile sponsors such as Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos, whose involvement has sparked criticism from activist groups. Their role highlights the growing intersection of wealth, influence, and cultural events like the Met Gala.

A New Space for Fashion Meets Art

This year introduces a significant change in venue layout. The exhibition will debut inside the newly unveiled Conde Nast Galleries, a redesigned space within the museum offering a more expansive setting for the collection.

The updated layout is expected to improve the experience for both gala attendees and future visitors, allowing easier movement between exhibition spaces and event areas such as the iconic Temple of Dendur, where the gala dinner is typically held.

Redefining Beauty and Representation

Curator Andrew Bolton has also taken steps to expand the narrative around beauty and form in fashion. The exhibition will feature mannequins representing a wider range of body types, including those historically underrepresented in both art and fashion.

Some of these mannequins were created using digital scans of real individuals, including activists and artists, offering a more inclusive and reflective display. Their mirrored surfaces are designed to engage visitors directly—inviting them to see themselves within the broader story of fashion.

From Society Dinner to Global Phenomenon

The Met Gala has come a long way since its beginnings in 1948 as a modest society dinner in New York. Over the decades, it has evolved into a global cultural event, known for its extravagant fashion, celebrity appearances, and viral moments.

Today, it stands at the intersection of art, fashion, entertainment, and philanthropy—capturing worldwide attention each year.

What Happens on the Big Night?

The evening follows a carefully orchestrated flow. After walking the red carpet, guests enter the museum, where phones are restricted to maintain privacy. They typically explore the exhibition, attend a cocktail reception, and then gather for an exclusive dinner.

Yet, despite the structured schedule, the night is known for its unpredictability—late arrivals, early exits, and the inevitable after-parties that extend the celebration well into the early hours.

With its bold theme and evolving vision, the 2026 Met Gala is poised to once again redefine the relationship between fashion and art—while delivering the kind of unforgettable spectacle the world has come to expect.

SpaceX wins $733M Space Force launch contract

The U.S. Space Force has awarded SpaceX a contract worth $733 million for eight launches, reinforcing the organization’s efforts to increase competition among space launch providers. This deal is part of the ongoing “National Security Space Launch Phase 3 Lane 1” program, overseen by Space Systems Command (SSC), which focuses on less complex missions involving near-Earth orbits.

Under the contract, SpaceX will handle seven launches for the Space Development Agency and one for the National Reconnaissance Office, all using Falcon 9 rockets. These missions are expected to take place no earlier than 2026.

Space Force launch contract

In 2023, the Space Force divided Phase 3 contracts into two categories: Lane 1 for less risky missions and Lane 2 for heavier payloads and more challenging orbits. Although SpaceX was chosen for Lane 1 launches, competitors like United Launch Alliance and Blue Origin were also in the running. The Space Force aims to foster more competition by allowing new companies to bid for future Lane 1 opportunities, with the next bidding round set for 2024. The overall Lane 1 contract is estimated to be worth $5.6 billion over five years.

Lt. Col. Douglas Downs, SSC’s leader for space launch procurement, emphasized the Space Force’s expectation of more competitors and greater variety in launch providers moving forward. The Phase 3 Lane 1 contracts cover fiscal years 2025 to 2029, with the option to extend for five more years, and the Space Force plans to award at least 30 missions over this period.

While SpaceX has a strong position now, emerging launch providers and new technologies could intensify the competition in the near future.
