Meta Introduces Employee Monitoring Tool To Boost AI Model Training

Meta Platforms is taking a more aggressive step toward building advanced artificial intelligence systems by introducing internal software that tracks how employees use their computers. The initiative is designed to help train AI models capable of performing everyday workplace tasks with minimal human input.

According to internal communications, the new system—called the Model Capability Initiative (MCI)—will record user interactions such as mouse movements, clicks, and keystrokes across selected work-related applications and websites. It will also occasionally capture screenshots to provide context for how tasks are completed.

Teaching AI How Humans Work

The goal behind the program is to improve AI performance in areas where machines still struggle to replicate human behavior. Tasks that seem simple to people—like navigating menus, selecting options from dropdown lists, or using keyboard shortcuts—remain challenging for AI systems.

By collecting real-world interaction data, Meta hopes to train its models using authentic examples of how employees perform these actions during their daily workflows. Internal messaging around the initiative emphasizes that employees can contribute to AI development simply by doing their regular jobs.

A company spokesperson confirmed that the collected data will be used exclusively to improve AI systems and not for evaluating employee performance. While Meta says safeguards are in place to filter out sensitive information, it has not publicly detailed how those protections will work in practice.

Part of a Larger AI Transformation

The rollout of MCI is part of a broader strategy led by Meta’s leadership to embed artificial intelligence deeply into the company’s operations. The initiative aligns with an internal program focused on developing AI agents—software systems designed to independently carry out complex tasks such as coding, data analysis, and workflow management.

The company envisions a future where AI agents handle much of the routine work, while human employees take on supervisory roles—guiding, reviewing, and refining the outputs generated by these systems. This “feedback loop” approach is intended to continuously improve AI performance based on real-world usage.

Industry-Wide Shift Toward Automation

Meta’s move reflects a wider trend across the tech industry, where companies are rapidly adopting AI to streamline operations and reduce reliance on manual labor. Advances in generative AI have already demonstrated the ability to build applications, manage data, and automate business processes with limited human oversight.

This shift is also reshaping workforce structures. Many tech firms are reducing headcount while simultaneously investing in AI capabilities. At Meta, leadership has been pushing employees to integrate AI tools into their workflows—even when doing so may initially slow productivity—arguing that long-term efficiency gains will outweigh short-term disruptions.

The company is also reorganizing teams around AI-focused roles, including the creation of specialized engineering groups tasked with improving AI coding abilities and developing autonomous agents for internal use.

Balancing Innovation and Privacy Concerns

While the initiative could accelerate AI development, it also raises questions about employee privacy and data security. Tracking detailed user interactions—even for technical purposes—can be sensitive, especially when combined with screen captures.

Experts note that transparency, clear data boundaries, and strong safeguards will be critical to maintaining trust among employees. Without those measures, efforts to collect large-scale behavioral data could face internal resistance or regulatory scrutiny.

Meta’s latest move underscores how central AI has become to the future of work—not just for consumers, but within companies themselves. By using employee behavior as training data, the company is effectively turning its workforce into a real-time learning environment for its AI systems.

SpaceX wins $733M Space Force launch contract

The U.S. Space Force has awarded SpaceX a contract worth $733 million for eight launches, reinforcing the organization’s efforts to increase competition among space launch providers. This deal is part of the ongoing “National Security Space Launch Phase 3 Lane 1” program, overseen by Space Systems Command (SSC), which focuses on less complex missions involving near-Earth orbits.

Under the contract, SpaceX will handle seven launches for the Space Development Agency and one for the National Reconnaissance Office, all using Falcon 9 rockets. These missions are expected to take place no earlier than 2026.

In 2023, the Space Force divided Phase 3 contracts into two categories: Lane 1 for less risky missions and Lane 2 for heavier payloads and more challenging orbits. Although SpaceX was chosen for Lane 1 launches, competitors like United Launch Alliance and Blue Origin were also in the running. The Space Force aims to foster more competition by allowing new companies to bid for future Lane 1 opportunities, with the next bidding round set for 2024. The overall Lane 1 contract is estimated to be worth $5.6 billion over five years.

Lt. Col. Douglas Downs, SSC’s leader for space launch procurement, emphasized the Space Force’s expectation of more competitors and greater variety in launch providers moving forward. The Phase 3 Lane 1 contracts cover fiscal years 2025 to 2029, with the option to extend for five more years, and the Space Force plans to award at least 30 missions over this period.

While SpaceX has a strong position now, emerging launch providers and new technologies could intensify the competition in the near future.
